Administration of the fire department starts at the township level. Under Indiana Code 36-8-13 the Township Trustee is responsible for providing fire protection in unincorporated areas of a township. In Bloomington Township’s case this includes those parts of the township outside of the incorporated city limits of Bloomington, Indiana.

Additionally Bloomington Township contractually provides fire and emergency services to both Washington and Benton Townships, creating a total response area of approximately 136 square miles.
