The Bloomington Township Department of Fire and Emergency Services
completed a Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey in 2004.
These surveys are conducted by the
Insurance Services Office
(ISO), and used by subscribing insurance agencies to help determine
insurance rates.
Bloomington Township changed its ISO designation at the
time of the survey from the Bloomington Township Fire
Department to the Bloomington Township Fire Response
Service Area. This is not a political boundary change,
or a fire department name change, and effects nothing but
the designation of the fire department's response area where
the ISO considers this one fire response community. This change
however, allows The Bloomington Township Department of Fire and
Emergency Services to carry its rating into the townships it
covers for fire response by contract. These townships include
Washington, Benton, as well as Bloomington Township, in Monroe
County Indiana. As of March 1, 2005 The Bloomington Township
Fire Response Service Area'sĀ improved ISO rating is a 5/9.
The Rating as it Applies to Bloomington Township Fire Response Service Area
When the ISO develops a single classification for a community,
all of the community's properties receive that classification.
In many communities, the ISO develops a split classification
(for example, 5/9). Generally, the first class, (Class 5 in the
example) applies to the properties within a defined distance
(5-road miles) of a fire station and within 1000 feet of a fire
hydrant. If this description applies to your property then your
ISO rating is a 5. The second class (Class 9 in the example)
applies to properties beyond 1000 feet of a hydrant but within
the defined distance (5-miles) of a fire station. If this description
applies to your property then your ISO rating is a 9.
ISO generally assigns Class 10 to properties beyond the defined
distance of a fire station.
The PPC program is not indented to analyze all aspects of
a comprehensive structure fire suppression delivery system
program. It is not for purposes of determining compliance with
any state or local law, nor is it for making recommendations
about loss prevention or life safety.
