ISO Rating

Bloomington Township Department of Fire and Emergency Services (BTDF&ES) completed a Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey in 2012. Additionally, BTDF&ES completed a Water Hauling Survey in 2013. These surveys are conducted by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), and used by subscribing insurance agencies to help determine insurance rates. The ISO rates a fire department's fire suppression ability on many factors, and on a scale (Public Protection Classification) of 1 to 10, where 1 is the best available protection. For a more in-depth description of how the ISO rates fire departments click here.

Bloomington Township changed its ISO designation at the time of the survey from the Bloomington Township Fire Department to the Bloomington Township Fire Response Service Area. This is not a political boundary change, or a fire department name change, and affects nothing but the designation of the fire department's response area where the ISO considers this one fire response community. This change, however, allows Bloomington Township Department of Fire and Emergency Services to carry its rating into the township it covers for fire response by contract. This includes Washington Township, as well as Bloomington Township, in Monroe County Indiana. Bloomington Township Department of Fire and Emergency Services' ISO rating is a 5/10.
BTDF&ES' previous rating was 5/9/10 before completing the water haul survey. To view our most recent PCC documeantation click here

The Rating as it applies to Bloomington Township Fire Response Service Area

When the ISO develops a single classification for a community, all of the community's properties receive that classification. In many communities, the ISO develops a split classification (for example, 6/9). Generally, the first class, (class 6 in the example) applies to the properties within a defined distance (5-road miles) of a (BTDF&ES) fire station and within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant. If this description applies to your property than your ISO rating is a 5. The second class (class 9 in the example) applies to properties beyond 1000 feet of a hydrant but within the defined distance (5-miles) of a fire station. If this description applies to your property than your ISO rating is still a 5. The ISO generally assigns class 10 to properties beyond the defined distance of a fire station.

In the case of BTDF&ES the 5/10 classification means that because BTDF&ES has proven via the additional ISO Water Hauling Survey, the department is able to adequately compensate for the lack of a hydrant within 1000 feet of a residence, thereby lowering the second class (class 9 in the example above) to a 5, and the 10 applies to those properties that are outside of the 5-mile distance to a BTDF&ES fire station as defined above.

The PPC program is not indented to analyze all aspects of a comprehensive structure fire suppression delivery system program. It is not for purposes of determining compliance with any state or local law, nor is it for making recommendations about loss prevention or life safety.
